There are several different ways of cooking scalloped potatoes.  One popular example is scalloped potatoes au gratin which cooks the sliced spuds with cheese.  The recipe on this page doesn't use cheese however, as the sausages contained in it make a deliciously substantial meal without the need for cheese as well. This recipe serves 4 people.

Ingredients for Scalloped Potatoes with Sausage Casserole

  • 900 grams (2lbs) of potatoes, preferably red potatoes
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1 onion
  • Pork Sausage or Kielbasa
  • Half a tablespoon of olive oil
  • 6 tablespoons of butter
  • 200 millilitres of milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

How to Cook

Chop your sausages into quarter inch (just over half a centimetre) thick slices at an angle so that you get oval shaped slices about an inch and a half or around 2 centimetres long.

Pour some oil in a frying pan and fry your onion slices.

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit (218 degrees Celsius)

Heat the 6 tablespoons of butter and milk together in a pan until the butter has melted.

Use a little extra butter to line a baking dish around 13 inch x 9 inch (33 centimetres x 23 cm) in size

Peel your potatoes and slice them into round slices of about an eighth of an inch (3 millimetres) thick.

Slice your onion thinly. Heat your olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat and sauté  the onions.  Once they are cooked, layer a quarter of the onions on the bottom of the baking dish.  Add half of the potatoes on top of the onions.

Sprinkle salt and pepper over the potato layer, then and add half of the remaining onions in another layer on top of the potatoes.

Next, use your sausages to create the meat layer.

Then place the remaining potatoes in a layer on top of these onions. Season with more salt and pepper.  Finally add a top layer of the remaining onions.

Pour your hot milk and butter mixture evenly over the top of your scalloped potato casserole. Then bake this all at 425 degrees Fahrenheit (218 degrees Celsius) for about 30 minutes or until the top has browned and the milk has been absorbed and the potatoes are soft.

Serve your scalloped potato and Sausage casserole with salad and dressing for a delicious meal.
